[Review] You Who Came From The Stars

Disclaimer: This entry is going to be solely on the drama I've been obsessing over lately. Please do not read on if you have seen and heard enough of this Korean drama which you would probably have guessed without me mentioning the name. *MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD*

And yes, that is none other than YOU WHO CAME FROM THE STARS.

If you have known me since a couple of years ago, or maybe even months ago, you would know that I am seriously an anti-kpop person. I don't listen to any kpop songs nor watch any kpop shows nor think any kpop idol is cute or worth going crazy over. And the main reason is really just because I cannot understand Korean, so I see no point in going gaga over kpop. Also because I feel all of them looked pretty the same and I always ask my friends how they differentiate their idols from the rest hahaha.

So when this show started getting SO popular and all everyone was talking about around me was this show, I naturally shut my ears and eyes away from all their comments, resisting the ~sensation~ everyone was having over this show. Even though I must admit I am a very easily influenced person, I resisted a long while before I finally decided to just watch it.

Simply because EVERYONE was talking about it! And by EVERYONE, I literally mean all the people around me, everywhere, be it real life, or on social media, every single day I would at least chance upon ONE tweet or ONE instagram picture about this drama. Even celebrities from all over the world were talking about it! Which led me to think "is it really THAT good?"

And I decided to just watch it, to see for myself just how good it is.

And tadang, I am so obsessed now. (nope not with kpop, just this show in particular)

I guess everyone sort of know about the synopsis of the show so I'm gonna skip that. In the beginning, I knew the drama just basically revolved around the love story of an alien and a celebrity. BUT, there were a lot more to it! Not just about love, but also about friendship, kinship, sacrifices, mystery etc. I was really hooked onto the show the moment I started.

I feel the story was really well-written, despite it being very unrealistic, but still, I've always believed that aliens DO exist, just not as hot as the one in the drama, hahaha. And what I particularly liked about the alien part was also how the scriptwriter restricted himself and did not go overboard with the alien's superpowers and all that. All the normal people in the show kept asking Do Min Joon if he could do this or that but really, all those special powers were purely just in our imagination and really just do not exist.

The cast were also well-picked. I think all of them carried our their roles really well, be it the main leads or the supporting roles, even the evil guy and the other characters. They all worked really well to bring out the distinctiveness of the plot. One particular character I really liked besides the main leads was Jang Young-mok.

He plays the lawyer + good friend of Do Min Joon for 30+ years and has been loyal to him since. The chemistry between the two was really good. Of course, Do Min Joon was supposed to be older than him, but he portrayed himself to be like a father to Do Min Joon, which was very heartwarming. Taking care of him when need be and knowing Do Min Joon's real identity and still befriending him while keeping it a secret.

This was one of my favourite scenes from the show. Slowly losing his capabilities towards the end, Do Min Joon lost his ability to transport to the correct places he wanted to go and landed up in a totally strange place with no proper winter wear and shoes. Jang Young-mok appears with a winter jacket, scarf and shoes for him.

Lawyer Yang: I almost died that day, you bought for me rice with soup, although I don’t really know your abilities at that time, you saved me and my mother… Can I hold on your hand for a while..?

Do Min Joon: Someone said before, you have to say goodbye in advance, because when you are really leaving in the end, you won’t be able to leave anymore. Thank you, I will never forget you.

This scene touched my heart so much. Not only was Lawyer Yang a friend to Do Min Joon, but more like a father too. The chemistry between the two made me feel how strong their friendship was. I will never be able to imagine a dear friend of mine leaving for good and I was able to feel Lawyer Yang's pain, so much so that he finally could not resist his tears anymore.

Of course what I particularly really loved was the love between Do Min Joon and Cheon Song-yi. Seriously, who wouldn't love this pairing? They were perfect!

I love how Do Min Joon was portrayed to be a really cold person at first. Just going about living his own life and not giving a damn about any other people around him. He purely just wanted to lead his last 3 months on earth peacefully and leave. Who knew Cheon Song-yi appeared and turned his personality 360 degrees around. I love how he slowly became nicer and nicer towards Cheon Song-yi whom he was very mean to in the beginning.

The little things he did for her without her knowing were very sweet. From the beginning, humiliating her in front of the whole class because of her copied report, talking to her in a very mean voice and asking her to turn away because he was going to press his password for his door lock, till the part his actions started to give way, bringing her to the hospital and staying there overnight with her, disallowing Kim Soo-hyun to enter the ward, allowing her to stay in his house, started to eat meals with her, remembered her scolding him for flipping the fish around, buying a mobile phone because of her, saving her countless times from all the danger, encouraging her and being by her side when the hate comments got really bad, and slowly finding himself falling for her, stopping time just to kiss her, to delete the text message he sent her, imagining a future with her, preparing a proposal for her, all of these were just SO cute.

Their love was so tough. Towards the end, I was really crying for them in every single episode because they loved each other so much and tried so hard to be together but so many things were in their way. How Do Min Joon tried so hard to protect her from the evil guy, how Do Min Joon tried to stay on for her despite his health slowly depreciating, how Do Min Joon told her it was okay for him to stay on earth, how Cheon Song-yi then found out that he was going to die if he stayed on and made the decision for him to leave just so he would be able to live on forever.

They carried out their crying scenes so beautifully it was hard not to go with their emotions and cry with them. One of the scenes which I cried really really badly was the day before he was going to leave.

It was SO touching! Just the look of their expressions was enough to kill my emotions thoroughly. I don't know how is it that some people can act SO god damn well. How do you even pretend to be in love with someone you are not in love with? How do you look him in the eyes with so much pain and tell him you love him? Just how? They did it so perfectly.

I also really liked how they kept flash-backing to Do Min Joon's past. With all these flashbacks, you find the story slowly revealing itself and will start to make more sense. I loved how Do Min Joon and Cheon Song-yi have this "exclusive interview" at the end of every episode. I loved the attentiveness of the producers, slowly revealing the purposes behind each action of Do Min Joon, e.g. why he asked her to open the car boot haha, and also how Cheon Song-yi saw the "I miss you" text at the end when she was looking through his phone. The arrangement of the plot was really special, instead of the usual "flow" of every typical drama, the way they did it with this show was splendid and unique. It kept me very captivated throughout every episode.

And definitely the ending? Perfect. I was so afraid that the ending was going to suck, with Do Min Joon leaving for good bla bla bla. But they made a plot twist in the end and the two still got together. Lovely!

aww so sweet!

I don't know how long more I am going to be obsessed over this show but it honestly is very good. This is the first Korean drama I've watched (seriously) and I never thought I'd be so in love with it. The OST for the show was perfect as well! Argh I am so in love with Do Min Joon and Cheon Song-yi!! How can anyone be so perfect but oh my god they just are.

I am rating this show with 5 stars out of 5 so anyone out there who are still resisting the show I really recommend you to watch it! Ending this LOOOONG entry with the epilogue's screen shots hehe.
